Fire Performance of GRP Explained: BS 476, EN 13501 and ASTM E84

Fire performance is not a single property of GRP. It depends on the resin system, reinforcement, additives, surface finish, product geometry, test method and end-use conditions. A classification is useful only when the evidence matches the product being specified.

What a GRP fire classification tells you

A fire test records behaviour under a defined laboratory method. It does not prove that a complete walkway, handrail, platform or enclosure will perform identically in every fire scenario. The value lies in matching the test specimen and classification to the intended application.

The terminology can look similar while the test arrangements, specimen conditioning and classification systems differ. The Composites UK fire-performance guidance is a useful industry starting point, but the project specification and the product’s current test evidence remain decisive.

Resin choice matters

Most general-purpose GRP products use a resin system selected for a balance of mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, manufacture and cost. Fire-retardant and specialist resin systems can change the product’s reaction-to-fire behaviour, but may also affect colour, lead time, minimum order, chemical resistance and price.

  1. Define the fire requirement. Record the relevant standard, classification, smoke requirement and end-use condition.
  2. Identify the exact product. State whether the requirement applies to grating, profiles, handrail, plate, stair products or a fabricated assembly.
  3. Match the evidence. Check resin, thickness, construction, finish and any field of application stated in the report.
  4. Review interfaces. Consider fixings, supports, penetrations, edge details and adjacent materials.
  5. Record approval. Keep the accepted report and product reference with the project submittal.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Which exact clause or classification does the project require?
  • Does the evidence identify the same product form and resin system?
  • Are smoke production, flaming droplets or toxicity part of the requirement?
  • Is the product decorative, load-bearing, part of an escape route or close to process equipment?
  • Has the responsible fire engineer or specifier accepted the evidence?

Frequently asked questions

Is all GRP fire retardant?

No. GRP products are made with different resin systems and constructions. Fire performance must be supported by evidence for the product being considered.

Is a BS 476 result the same as an EN 13501 classification?

No. They are different routes with different tests and reporting conventions. The project team should confirm which evidence is acceptable.

Can an ASTM E84 result be used on a UK project?

It may provide useful supporting information, but it should not be assumed to satisfy a UK specification. The responsible specifier must assess its relevance.

Does a fire classification cover the complete installed system?

Not automatically. Test evidence normally relates to a defined specimen and method. Supports, fixings, joints and the wider assembly need separate consideration.
