Names vary across the market. On GRP Express, the active panel-to-panel products are described as G-clamps; some suppliers use C-clip or panel-clamp terminology for a similar function. Always match the exact geometry.

The fastener is only one part of the connection
A fixing is part of the load path. Material grade, washer size, hole geometry, bolt spacing and tightening method all influence the GRP connection—not just the fastener diameter.
Fastener & environment
- Select stainless or another fastener material for the actual chemical, marine or atmospheric exposure.
- Assess galvanic and crevice-corrosion risks at mixed-material interfaces.
- Confirm strength grade, thread form and project documentation.
GRP bearing detail
- Check bolt bearing, net section, end/edge tear-out and bolt-group distribution.
- Use adequate washers or spreader plates; avoid small contact areas.
- Provide sleeves or internal packing through hollow profiles where clamp force could crush walls.
Movement & tightening
- Set hole clearance or slots deliberately for fit and thermal movement.
- Use controlled tightening suited to composite walls; excessive torque can damage the laminate.
- Record locking and inspection requirements for vibration or cyclic service.
Technical note: Bolt spacing, edge distance, hole clearance and torque must come from a verified connection design or the relevant manufacturer’s instructions. Steel detailing rules should not be transferred to GRP without verification.

A complete joint transfers applied actions through the GRP component, plates and fasteners into a verified substrate. Selecting a stainless bolt does not establish GRP bearing resistance, baseplate behaviour or anchor capacity.

- Control holes, edge distances and fibre direction.
- Distribute clamping through suitable washers or plates.
- Avoid unverified torque transferred from steel practice.
Fastener assembly
- Define diameter, grade, length and thread position.
- Specify nut, washer and locking method.
- Assess corrosion and material compatibility.
- Allow access for installation and inspection.
Substrate anchor
- Define tension, shear and moment actions.
- Confirm substrate, edges, spacing and thickness.

Concrete and masonry anchors require their own design route
BS EN 1992-4 addresses design of fastenings in concrete. BS 8539:2012+A1:2021 addresses safe selection and installation of post-installed anchors in concrete and masonry. Generic GRP fixing guidance cannot replace those project checks.

Catalogue check required: the active 50mm J-clamp product title says “Mini Mesh”, while its SKU contains the standard/open-mesh family code. It remains visible in the catalogue but is intentionally excluded from automated compatibility recommendations until the family is confirmed.

Send a fixing questionCan a standard bolt torque be used on GRP?
Not automatically. Tightening must achieve the connection requirement without crushing or damaging the laminate; use the verified joint instruction.
Does stainless steel grade determine anchor capacity?
No. Capacity also depends on anchor type, size, embedment, substrate, edges, spacing, installation and applied actions.
Why are large washers used with GRP?
They can distribute bearing and clamping over a larger area, but their size and thickness must still belong to a checked connection detail.
When is proof testing required?
Testing requirements depend on the anchor specification, substrate uncertainty, installation control and project risk; they must be defined by the responsible designer or specification.
Is a panel-to-panel clamp the same as a hold-down clip?
No. A panel clamp joins neighbouring grating panels, while a hold-down clip retains grating to a suitable support. A complete installation may require both functions.
Are bolts and nuts included with every fixing product?
Do not assume so. Products described as a “full assembly” include the listed assembly, while clip-only and plate products may follow a different supply scope. Check the exact product name and description before ordering.
