Installation guides
GRP installation guidance for cutting, fixing and site preparation.
Plan supports, fixings, cutting, drilling, edge sealing and inspection before installing GRP grating, profiles, handrails and stair products.
Installation sequence
These notes are for practical planning and enquiry support. Always follow project drawings, site rules, risk assessments, product datasheets and any engineer or manufacturer instructions supplied for the job.
Check support layout
Confirm clear span, support direction, bearing width, removable covers, edge support and any openings before cutting or fixing.
Confirm product route
Standard mesh, mini mesh, solid top, pultruded slab and profiles each need different support and preparation thinking.
Mark cuts clearly
Use a cut list or drawing for notches, pipe penetrations, CNC-style shapes, holes and repeat panel sizes.
Use suitable tools
GRP can be cut and drilled with appropriate blades, bits, extraction, PPE and site controls for dust and sharp edges.
Prepare cut edges
Confirm whether cut edges, holes or exposed fibres need sealing for the environment and product route.
Fix securely
Use suitable clips, clamps, fasteners, baseplates or brackets for the substrate and access requirement.
Inspect the route
Check trip edges, support contact, fixing tightness, colour contrast, drainage and surface condition before handover.
Record changes
Keep marked drawings or photos of final cut panels, access covers and support changes for repeat maintenance work.
Product-specific installation checks
| Product | Before installation | Fixing and finishing notes |
|---|---|---|
| GRP grating | Confirm span, support direction, bearing surface, panel orientation and load route. | Use correct grating clips, avoid unsupported edges, plan cut-outs and seal edges where required. |
| Solid top grating | Check drainage, weight, lifting access and whether closed surface is suitable for the area. | Plan fixings so panels remain secure but accessible where covers need removal. |
| Pultruded slab-style flooring | Confirm load path, support centres, deflection requirement and drawings. | Directional strength matters; do not rotate or cut without checking support implications. |
| GRP profiles | Check section type, cut length, fixing holes, bracket interfaces and whether the use is structural. | Use appropriate drilling, washers, fasteners and edge treatment for the environment. |
| GRP handrails | Confirm route length, post centres, baseplate type, fixing substrate, corners and returns. | Check duty class, top rail continuity, mid-rail height and fixing integrity before handover. |
| Stair treads and nosings | Confirm tread size, nosing contrast, fixing surface and slip/wear conditions. | Fix evenly, avoid proud edges and inspect after installation for movement or trip risk. |
Cut-to-size information to send
A good cut list prevents site delays. For awkward work, send a photo or marked sketch even if the final drawing follows later.

Installation support routes
Move from the site task into the right GRP Express route.
Grating clips
Hold-down clips, saddle clips and fixing routes for grating panels.
View fixingsLoad checks
Use span and load guidance before choosing thickness or cutting panels.
Use calculatorProfiles
Angles, channels, box section and tubes for frames and supports.
View profile guideHandrails
Estimate posts, route lengths and loading route before component selection.
Use handrail calculatorPreparing a cut or installation enquiry?
Send the sketch, panel schedule, span, fixing detail and site conditions. We can help route the order and flag missing information before material is prepared.
Installation-control framework
Install from approved information—and stop when site conditions differ
Product guidance supports competent installation but does not replace project drawings, risk assessments, method statements, temporary works, permits or supervision. Verify the substrate and layout before cutting or drilling.
Pre-start
- Confirm product, drawing and revision.
- Inspect supports, levels, spans and interfaces.
- Check access, lifting, exclusion and rescue needs.
- Review SDS, COSHH and tool controls.
Installation
- Follow product-specific cutting and fixing instructions.
- Preserve bearing, orientation and edge support.
- Control holes, tightening, adhesives and cure.
- Protect completed work from premature loading.
Handover
- Inspect alignment, damage, fixings and trip hazards.
- Record changes and approved concessions.
- Retain labels, datasheets and maintenance information.
- Define periodic inspection where required.
Stop-work triggers
Pause and seek instruction for missing supports, unexpected substrate, dimensions outside tolerance, damaged laminate, altered loading, incompatible fixings, unapproved holes, incomplete edge protection or any condition that changes the verified load path.
Minimum installation information
- Approved layout and product schedule.
- Support and fixing details.
- Cut, hole and edge-treatment instructions.
- Handling, lifting and temporary stability controls.
- Inspection and acceptance criteria.
- Escalation route for site changes.
Installation-guidance FAQs
Is this guidance a project method statement?
No. The contractor must prepare project-specific risk assessments and method statements covering the real site, equipment, people and sequence.
What if the supports do not match the drawing?
Stop and obtain an approved resolution before cutting or fixing. Site adaptation can alter span, bearing and load paths.
Can a damaged panel or profile be installed?
Only after competent assessment and an approved disposition. Do not conceal or load damaged laminate.
What should be recorded at handover?
Record products, drawings, changes, fixings, inspections, repairs, photographs, outstanding actions and maintenance requirements.
Installation planning routes
Installation planning should cover substrate, support, cutting, drilling, fixings, edge finishing, access for maintenance and any site-specific safety requirements.
Fixing selection
Match clips, plates, bolts or structural fixings to the product family and substrate.
Grating clips and fixingsCutting routes
Plan cut-to-size panels or cut-to-length profiles before ordering site materials.
Cut-to-size GRPAccess safety context
Where stairs, ramps, guarding or ladders are involved, check the relevant building guidance.
Approved Document KHow-to videos and calculators
Use the practical how-to pages for measuring, cutting, fixing and fitting GRP products. Each route includes step-by-step checks, a video-ready area and a simple calculator to help prepare a cleaner enquiry or order.
How to cut and drill GRP safely
Question-led searches often include how to drill GRP, how to cut fibreglass grating and which tools to use for GRP profiles. Use suitable cutting/drilling tools, PPE and dust control, support the workpiece properly, avoid damaging load-bearing features, and follow the product guidance for cut-edge treatment where required.
For detailed cutting guidance see Cutting, Fabrication and PPE.
