Project overview
A floor system, not just a panel size.
Vital GRP worked with Kier on GRP RiserDeck® floor access at the University of Southampton. The project trail calls for opening, support and service-drawing coordination, while the site photographs show GRP walking surfaces during construction.
GRP Express uses that real project to explain specification and buying decisions. It does not separately claim to have designed, supplied or installed this package.

Geometry and services determine the route.
What the opening needs
Measured clear spans, intended loads, perimeter bearing, service penetrations, access duty and future changes all affect the arrangement. A grating panel chosen on plan size alone leaves those interfaces unresolved.
What Southampton illustrates
The RiserDeck® project records call for trimmer and service-drawing coordination. Photographs show GRP grating at the workface, alongside temporary access equipment and building-service interfaces.

- Service-layout drawings and intended penetrations
- Pedestrian or maintenance loads and access envelope
- Removal, lifting and future maintenance requirements
- Environment and project-specific assurance requirements
Use current GRP grating load/span data for product selection, and seek engineered review where supports or service openings make the floor a system requirement. Do not transfer a load or fire claim from a photograph to a new site.
