Safer fixed-ladder access

GRP Ladder Rung Covers

Add a durable gritted surface to worn, smooth or exposed ladder rungs with corrosion-resistant GRP covers prepared around the rung size and site conditions.

Where ladder rung covers help

Wet and exposed ladders

Improve grip on fixed ladders around tanks, pits, roofs, utilities and outdoor access routes.

Maintenance upgrades

Upgrade serviceable metal rungs where the surface has become polished, worn or difficult to use safely.

High-visibility routes

Use safety-yellow covers where rung position and ladder access need to remain visually clear.

Why specify GRP rung covers?

  • Hard-wearing gritted surface for improved foothold.
  • Corrosion-resistant construction for wet and exposed environments.
  • Lightweight covers that can be prepared to suit repeated rung dimensions.
  • Contrasting colour options for clearer access routes.
  • Suitable for planned retrofit work where the supporting ladder remains serviceable.

Choosing a ladder rung cover

Start with the rung shape, width, depth or diameter, clear ladder width and quantity. The fixing approach also depends on the rung material, access conditions and whether the ladder can be isolated during installation.

Send a close photograph with a tape measure against the rung, plus an overall ladder image. This helps us distinguish round, square, channel or unusual rung details before recommending a route.

Useful details to send

  • Rung shape and dimensions
  • Clear ladder width and quantity
  • Existing ladder material and condition
  • Indoor, outdoor or chemical exposure
  • Photographs and delivery postcode

Need help identifying the rung profile?

Send a measured photograph and the number of rungs. Our team can help narrow the practical product route.

Ladder rung covers: anti-slip retrofit without hiding ladder defects

A rung cover can improve surface texture and visual contrast, but it does not restore ladder strength or certify the underlying ladder. Inspect the ladder and confirm its suitability before covering any rung.

Pre-installation survey

  • Identify the ladder standard and application: BS 4211 or BS EN ISO 14122-4 may be relevant depending on scope.
  • Check rungs, stiles, welds/fixings, corrosion, cracking, deformation and movement.
  • Confirm rung dimensions, spacing, stand-off and available foot clearance.

Cover and bond

  • Match the cover to the rung shape without rocking or sharp edges.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply adhesive strictly to the approved product method.
  • Control bond-line, open time, temperature, cure and temporary restraint.

After installation

  • Verify every cover is fully seated and secure before use.
  • Check that added thickness has not reduced safe clearance or introduced a trip/snag point.
  • Include looseness, cracking, wear, contamination and missing grit in periodic inspection.

Flat-coupon slip-test results can help describe the surfacing but may not reproduce footwear contact on a narrow curved rung. Safe ladder use also depends on rung geometry, footwear, contamination, user technique and the condition of the complete ladder.

Specification note: Do not cover a defective rung as a repair. Isolate the ladder and obtain competent structural repair or replacement where the underlying ladder is damaged or its capacity is uncertain.

Improve rung grip without concealing the condition of the ladder

A GRP rung cover is an anti-slip retrofit for a compatible, sound rung. It is not a structural repair, a fall-arrest system or evidence that the fixed ladder and its anchors comply.

Access hierarchyConfirm that a fixed ladder remains the appropriate access method through the risk assessment.
Rung conditionInspect corrosion, cracks, looseness, rotation, welds and connections before covering.
Profile fitMatch internal cover profile, rung diameter/shape and length without rocking or reducing critical clearances.
Rescue and fall riskCoordinate gates, landings, hoops, personal systems and rescue; a hoop alone is not positive fall arrest.
DecisionInformation to establishResponsibility boundary
Ladder scopeBuilding ladder under BS 4211, machinery ladder under BS EN ISO 14122-4, or asset-owner requirement.Identify the governing scope; dimensions and fall-protection provisions are not interchangeable.
Rung geometryRung shape/diameter, clear width, spacing, wall/toe clearance and side-member interfaces. The cover must not materially reduce usable clearance or create a snag at its ends.
BondingCompatible adhesive/sealant, surface preparation, cure, temperature, moisture and inspection.Verify compatibility with the rung material and environment; isolate the ladder until cure is achieved.
System conditionStiles, brackets, anchors, landing, gate, guardrails, security and corrosion.A sound rung cover does not validate the ladder system or its supporting structure.

Technical boundary: HSE advises that ladder hoops alone may not arrest a fall safely. The dutyholder must assess access selection, additional fall protection and rescue for the complete ladder route.

Technical questions

Can a rung cover repair a corroded ladder rung?

No. Structurally defective, loose or excessively corroded rungs and connections must be repaired or replaced before any cover is considered.

How is the correct cover profile selected?

Measure the rung shape, diameter or dimensions, clear length and nearby stile details; confirm the internal cover profile fits without rocking or reducing essential clearance.

Does a ladder cage make a rung cover system fall-safe?

No. The cover only addresses footing grip. HSE warns that hoops alone may not arrest a fall safely, so fall protection and rescue require separate assessment.

Which ladder standard applies?

BS 4211 covers certain permanently fixed ladders to structures, while BS EN ISO 14122-4 applies to fixed access to machinery. Project and asset-owner requirements may add further controls.
