GRP Adhesives: PU230 and Chemsure E40

Select the adhesive by substrate, joint function and exposure. PU230 provides a rapid, water-resistant polyurethane bonding route; Chemsure E40 provides a two-part structural epoxy route for suitable composite and mixed-material assemblies.

Two adhesive routes

Choose by function—not simply by product name

PU230 and Chemsure E40 are different adhesive chemistries. Selection must consider both substrates, surface finish, joint geometry, movement, moisture, temperature, chemicals and the load the joint is expected to transfer.

Polyurethane route

PU230 is a thixotropic polyurethane paste adhesive that cures to form a strong, water-resistant bond. It is intended for suitable porous-to-porous and porous-to-non-porous construction and repair applications.

Structural epoxy route

Chemsure E40 Structural Epoxy

E40 is a two-part, 1:1 mix epoxy adhesive for suitable metals, wood, composites and certain plastics. It provides a high-strength rigid bonding route where joint design and controlled preparation support structural load transfer.

Application control

Confirm the GRP resin system, surface veil, coating or gel coat and the material being joined.

Prepare

Remove dust, grease, release agents and weak surface material using the manufacturer-approved method.

Apply

Control bead or bond-line geometry, mixing, open time, assembly pressure and any required fixturing.

Cure

Protect the joint from movement, moisture and loading until the specified cure has been achieved at the actual temperature.

Where adhesive selection can support the installation

Anti-slip sheets, strips and covers

Bonded installation may supplement mechanical fixing where permitted by the product method. Check the base material, contamination, traffic, water and temperature before choosing the adhesive.

Profile fabrication and fittings

Adhesive can form part of a connection detail, but structural load transfer must be supported by a qualified joint design and the correct mechanical connection where required.

Finishing and installation details

PU230 may provide a practical cartridge-applied route for suitable construction details where rapid application, water resistance and gap filling are important.

Composite and mixed-material bonding

E40 provides a structural epoxy route for verified composite, metal, timber and selected plastic combinations where a rigid, high-strength bond is required.

Can PU230 be used with GRP?

Potentially, where the exact GRP surface and the second substrate fall within the approved application. PU230 is primarily described for porous-to-porous and porous-to-non-porous bonding, so verify coated, smooth or gel-coated GRP before use.

Is Chemsure E40 suitable for GRP?

E40 is described for composites as well as metals, wood and certain plastics. Confirm the resin, surface finish, preparation, joint geometry and exposure for the exact GRP component.

Which adhesive is best for a structural GRP joint?

No adhesive should be selected from strength wording alone. E40 offers a structural epoxy route, but the joint must be designed and verified for the applied loads, bond area, peel, cleavage, temperature, ageing and inspection requirements.

Can adhesive replace mechanical fixings?

Only where the product system and joint design explicitly permit it. Many GRP installations use mechanical fixings, adhesive or a controlled combination depending on the duty and consequence of failure.

Do I need to abrade GRP before bonding?

Follow the adhesive and GRP manufacturer’s instructions. Abrasion may be required for some surfaces, but uncontrolled preparation can damage the veil, expose fibres or leave dust that weakens adhesion.

When can the bonded component be loaded?

Only after the required cure has been achieved for the actual material and ambient temperatures. A surface feeling firm does not confirm full cure or design strength.
