Cutting and drilling GRP safely and accurately

GRP is abrasive and can generate fine glass/resin dust. Tool selection, work support and extraction affect cut quality, operator exposure and the risk of fibre breakout or delamination.

Tooling

  • Use sharp carbide, diamond-grit or manufacturer-recommended tooling suited to the profile and cut.
  • Choose speed and feed to avoid rubbing, overheating and resin damage.
  • Replace worn tooling before it tears fibres or drives excessive heat.

Work control

  • Support and clamp the profile without crushing it or marking finished faces.
  • Back up the exit face when drilling and control breakthrough.
  • Mark datum faces and verify orientation before repeat machining.

Exposure control

  • Use effective on-tool extraction or another suitable dust-control method.
  • Wear PPE selected from the task risk assessment and product safety information.
  • Keep dust out of skin, eyes, breathing zones and electrical equipment.
  • Inspect finished edges and holes for breakout, delamination, heat damage and exposed fibres.
  • Deburr without aggressively removing load-bearing material.
  • Apply edge treatment only where required by the product or exposure specification.
  • Follow applicable workplace exposure controls and dispose of dust/offcuts in accordance with site requirements.

Technical note: A notch, slot or hole alters section capacity. Obtain design approval before site modification of a structural member, and follow the tool and GRP manufacturer’s instructions.

Clean GRP preparation depends on tooling, support and dust control together

Select the blade or drill for the exact laminate, thickness, cut geometry and equipment. Secure the work, support both sides where needed and control dust at source rather than treating PPE as the only measure.

Before cutting

  • Confirm the approved cut and hole schedule.
  • Check for load bars, fibres and critical edges.
  • Choose suitable tool speed, blade or bit.
  • Plan extraction, exclusion and waste collection.

During cutting

  • Support the work without inducing vibration.
  • Maintain guards and stable tool control.
  • Avoid overheating, binding and forced feed.
  • Keep dust away from people and equipment.

After cutting

  • Inspect breakout, delamination and exposed fibres.
  • Deburr without enlarging the approved geometry.
  • Apply edge protection where specified.
  • Clean with controlled methods, not dry sweeping.

Dust is a COSHH issue

Cutting and drilling create dust that must be assessed and controlled. Use the hierarchy of controls, suitable extraction and current task-specific risk information; select respiratory and other PPE as part of—not instead of—the control strategy.

Cutting-tool FAQs

Can a general-purpose blade cut GRP?

Only if it is suitable for the exact composite, thickness, tool and cut quality required. Incompatible tooling can overheat, chip or damage the laminate.

Is a dust mask enough for GRP cutting?

Not by itself. Assess the task under COSHH and control dust at source with suitable equipment and work methods, then specify PPE for residual risk.

Can holes be enlarged on site?

Only under an approved change. Enlargement affects edge distance, bearing, fit and connection capacity and can conceal fabrication errors.

Why should cut edges be inspected?

Inspection identifies delamination, breakout, exposed fibres and incorrect geometry before the part is installed or sealed.
