Safe, surveyed GRP access around constrained buffer-vessel plant

Vital GRP surveyed, designed and installed a tailored GRP access platform, twin hooped CAT ladders, protected gates, close-fitting infills and a dedicated hatch for Gilbert-Ash in Woking.

Project overview

The buffer-vessel area combined existing steelwork, pipework and restricted approach routes. A standard platform arrangement would not have provided the safe, practical coverage required. The access system therefore had to be measured around the live site geometry and coordinated as a single package.

Vital GRP completed the survey, fabrication and site installation, bringing the platform, ladder, guarding and hatch details together before final sign-off.

The access challenge

The completed arrangement needed to improve movement and maintenance access without compromising surrounding services. Key constraints included plant penetrations through the platform area, limited space for vertical access, existing supporting steelwork and the need to protect ladder openings at platform level.

These conditions made accurate site measurement and coordination essential. The geometry could not safely be treated as a catalogue-only selection.

The installed solution

  • Two hooped GRP CAT ladders for defined vertical access routes
  • Guarded ladder openings with self-closing access gates
  • Close-fitting GRP grating infills around pipework and steelwork
  • A high-visibility dedicated access hatch within the platform
  • Coordinated handrail and edge protection around the working area

What this project demonstrates for specifiers

For access systems around tanks, vessels and congested plant, the survey must capture more than the overall platform size. A useful specification should record:

  • Plant, steelwork, pipework, clearances and approach routes
  • The maintenance envelope and any removable-access requirement
  • Platform dimensions, supports, imposed loads and grating span direction
  • Ladder width, hoop start, gates and edge-protection interfaces
  • Resin, fire, chemical and environmental requirements
  • Agreed drawings, dimensions, installation records and completion sign-off

Evidence retained for this project: surveyed constraints and service penetrations; agreed ladder, platform and hatch dimensions; survey, fabrication and site-installation records; and signed completion with no snagging recorded.

Outcome

The finished installation provides clearer, guarded access to the buffer-vessel area and makes better use of the available platform footprint. Tailored grating, defined ladder routes, protected openings and the dedicated hatch were delivered as one coordinated access package.
