How to specify GRP

A good GRP specification does more than name a material. It defines the product family, duty, environment, evidence, dimensions, fixings and installation boundary.

The six-part GRP specification

1. Product family

Choose grating, profiles, handrails, anti-slip covers, access systems or fabricated assemblies. Do not leave the product type ambiguous.

2. Geometry

State dimensions, spans, depths, mesh, profile section, rail height, openings, cut-outs and tolerances.

3. Duty

Define load, deflection, traffic, impact, access frequency, pedestrian use and whether the item is structural or non-structural.

4. Environment

State water, chemicals, UV, temperature, salt, fire, electrical, washdown, oils and cleaning exposure.

5. Fixing and support

Specify clips, clamps, baseplates, anchors, adhesive, bearing, support width, edge distance and inspection access.

6. Evidence and handover

Request relevant load, resin, slip, datasheet, drawing, installation and maintenance information for the real application.

Example wording to avoid

Too vague

“Provide GRP flooring.” This misses load, span, mesh, resin, surface, fixings and cut-outs.

Better

“Provide GRP grating panels to stated depth and mesh, suitable for the shown support spans, environment and fixing schedule.”

Best

Add drawings, load/deflection basis, resin/fire/slip requirements, cut list, fixing schedule, inspection and maintenance expectations.

Turn a GRP requirement into a usable specification

A strong GRP specification gives the supplier, designer and installer the same set of decisions. It should identify the product, service environment, load and support conditions, evidence required and the boundary between material supply and project design.

Start with the duty

Record who will use the route, the expected traffic, loads, clear span, deflection expectations and whether the component is structural or non-structural.

Define the environment

State water, salt, chemicals, UV, temperature, electrical, fire, washdown and contamination conditions rather than using a broad label such as “external use”.

Close the interfaces

Identify supports, bearings, fixings, cut-outs, tolerances, adjacent materials, drainage, edge protection and the party responsible for installation design.

Can one generic GRP specification cover every product?
