Mid-rails complete the guarding geometry
A mid-rail is part of the guarding arrangement, not simply an extra length of tube. Its level, continuity and connection to posts must suit the system layout, required openings and the relevant access or guarding criteria.
For straight runs, stairs and landings, plan mid-rails alongside posts and top rails so cut lengths, fittings and joint positions remain coordinated.

Can I replace one damaged mid-rail?
Usually, provided the existing section, colour, dimensions and fitting arrangement can be identified from measurements and photographs.

Mid-rails and intermediate protection
The intermediate rail reduces the unprotected opening and helps contain a person at the edge. Its required position and the permissible gaps depend on the governing standard and use—not on a universal centreline dimension.
Set the opening
Dimension from finished floor, stair pitch line or platform surface as appropriate. Include toe-board height and the actual top-rail position when checking clear gaps.
Check the rail
Verify transverse bending, connection pull-out or rotation, rail-end engagement and any point-load requirement. Long rails may need intermediate post support.
Detail continuity
Resolve corners, gates, removable panels and changes in level so that intermediate protection is not unintentionally interrupted.
For construction work, HSE guidance identifies a maximum 470 mm gap between the top rail and intermediate protection. That figure should be used only in its proper Work at Height context and does not replace project-specific building or machinery-access requirements.
Specification note: A mid-rail is a safety component, not a decorative rail. Record its finished level, maximum clear openings and connection method on the installation drawing.
