Specify the barrier before selecting the components

“Handrail”, “guardrail” and “barrier” are not interchangeable design descriptions. A graspable handrail assists movement; a barrier or guardrail resists people falling from an edge. Many assemblies perform both functions, but only when their complete system geometry, loads, fixings and substrate have been verified.

No single component creates compliance. Posts, rails, fittings, baseplates, anchors, supporting steelwork/GRP and installation tolerances form one load path.

Specification note: State the applicable regime and design load in the enquiry. BS EN ISO 14122 should not be applied as a blanket substitute for building-barrier requirements outside its machinery-access scope.

Technical questions

Is every handrail also a protective barrier?

No. A handrail may provide grasp support, while a protective barrier must resist the applicable actions and control the fall or access hazard as a complete system.

Which standard applies to a GRP handrail system?

The project must identify the governing context. BS 6180 addresses relevant barriers in and about buildings; BS EN ISO 14122-3 addresses guardrails associated with permanent access to machinery.

Can route length determine the component list?

Not reliably. Corners, ends, openings, gates, level changes, post fixing and toe-board requirements materially change the schedule.

What should be sent for technical selection?

Send a marked-up plan and elevations, barrier function, governing standard, loads, height, post support, environment and every gate or interface.

Add an accessible warm-to-touch handrail route where the project requires it.
