Specify a stepway as its own assembly
The purpose of a stepway is to negotiate a sloping maintenance route using successive level treads. Its step positions, connections and roof supports need to be set out together. A tread order becomes meaningful when the required geometry and supporting arrangement are known.
This product enquiry covers a different need from continuous GRP roof walkways and from a local stepover. If your project is still at concept stage, discuss the complete GRP stepway design with Vital GRP before committing to components.
QuartzGrip® treads for the contact surface
Discuss open-mesh grating treads and appropriate front-edge treatment. The required width, going, thickness and clear opening should be stated in your schedule. Contrasting edges can be considered where visibility is important; final dimensions must work with the intended stair geometry.
Specify the walking surface, not just the material. Selected QuartzGrip® surfaces carry R13 test evidence under DIN 51130; ask for the report covering the exact finish offered. R13 is a ramp-test classification, not proof of ice performance or a whole-system approval.

What to include in a stepway quotation
- Tread references, finished sizes and quantities.
- GRP framing members specified by the design.
- Required holes, cut details and preparation tolerances.
- Connections and support components expressly included in scope.
- Contrasting nosings or edge treatments where selected.
- Handrail components where part of the verified arrangement.
Use GRP profiles and handrail components to build the broader schedule. Roof attachments are selected against the specific roof, not added as a generic accessory.
Measure the route before ordering
Provide a roof plan and side elevation with roof pitch, total rise, available run, route width and end levels. Identify any landings, changes of direction, obstacles and equipment clearances. Show the roof construction and intended support locations.
A photo is useful context, but it cannot establish dimensions or the building’s load capacity. Where measurements or structural information are missing, resolve them before fabrication so the tread sequence and support positions can be confirmed.
Choose supply-only or a complete project route
Contractors with an established design can request prepared components against a schedule. Send the information through cut-to-size supply and identify each part so the quote reflects the required preparation.

Why the surface and frame both matter
A consistent stepped route needs structurally suitable treads and a sound frame. GRP offers a corrosion-resistant material option for exposed access, but the assembly’s load capacity depends on the chosen sections, spans, connections and supports. Specify those details together.
A gritted QuartzGrip® surface introduces an aggregate texture into the contact area. Smooth, untreated metal can require an added slip-resistant finish; serrated, perforated or coated metal surfaces need assessment on their own evidence. GRP framing also offers a corrosion-resistant material option. Compare the complete systems, including supports, connections, fire requirements and maintenance, rather than assuming a material name establishes performance.
Rain, ice and routine maintenance
Outdoor routes still need inspection, cleaning and a winter plan. Rain, contamination, algae, frost and ice change conditions underfoot. Keep drainage clear, remove deposits and manage freezing conditions with suitable treatment or restricted access. Match footwear and working arrangements to the conditions.
Keep tread edges visible and the openings free from accumulated debris. Inspect movement at connections, damage to the surface and the condition of supports. A maintenance route may need to be closed during unsuitable weather even when a tested aggregate finish has been selected.
Delivery for a fabricated package
Stepway packages are quoted to the agreed design and preparation scope. Component dimensions, quantity, assembly requirements and delivery access influence the programme. Confirm lead time and unloading arrangements in your quotation.
Use project material quotes for a coordinated enquiry. Identify the required site date and the sequence in which the installer needs the components, particularly where access to the roof is restricted.

- Make clear whether the request is for treads only, prepared components or a wider package.
- Separate structural treads from covers and nosings.
- State whether guarding and roof attachments are included in your design.
- Include the current drawing revision and agreed component references.

Questions before you specify or order
Is a stepway available as a separate product?
Yes. Use this dedicated enquiry route for stepped roof access, with its own geometry and materials schedule.
Can you quote from a sketch?
A dimensioned sketch can start an enquiry. Final manufacture needs confirmed dimensions and an agreed supporting and attachment arrangement.
Can I use tread covers as spanning treads?
Do not assume so. Covers require a suitable supporting substrate; spanning treads need structural verification for their actual span and loads.
Are handrails included?
Only where specified and listed in the quotation. The complete guarding arrangement needs suitable supports and connections.
Is this an escape staircase?
No such duty is assumed. Any escape or public-access requirement needs a separately defined and verified design.
Can I request QuartzGrip® test evidence?
Yes. Ask for the relevant report for the proposed surface; an R13 statement does not demonstrate ice performance or load capacity.
