If the engineering is already established, request panels and components against your schedule. If the deck needs cutting, send finished sizes and quantities. If the route is still being developed, request support before buying materials so the roof interface and complete system can be resolved.

What a roof walkway package can contain

Discuss the cut grating, GRP framing members and connections required by your design. A package quotation should show quantities, dimensions and the exact preparation included. Supports, roof attachments, guarding and installation are included only where expressly listed.

Use GRP structural profiles for framing enquiries and GRP handrail components where the design requires guarding. Roof-specific attachment components need a verified specification before supply.

Compare continuous routes and stepways

A continuous walkway generally connects maintenance locations using a deck along the agreed route. A GRP stepway uses defined level treads on a sloping access route. Choose the right enquiry path rather than ordering walkway panels for an unresolved stepped arrangement.

Buying checks that avoid the wrong order

• Confirm finished dimensions rather than estimating from a photograph.
• State the design loading and unsupported span for each piece.
• Include clear mesh opening and surface requirements.
• Identify bearing, cut edges, openings, holes and part references.
• Specify which fixings and support components the installer already has.
• Give the site postcode, unloading constraints and required delivery date.

Panel dimensions cannot substitute for a structural check. Thickness, mesh, span, supports and connections all affect the use of the proposed components.

Use on HVAC, solar and industrial roof routes

A defined supply package can support maintenance access to ventilation equipment, rooftop plant and inspection points. Solar-array routes need their clearances, electrical interfaces and cable runs coordinated within the building’s maintenance plan.

For replacements, check the existing frame and fixings before ordering new grating. A matching panel size does not prove the old supports remain sound or that the proposed replacement has the required capacity.

GRP, metal and the exposed surface

A gritted QuartzGrip® surface introduces an aggregate texture into the contact area. Smooth, untreated metal can require an added slip-resistant finish; serrated, perforated or coated metal surfaces need assessment on their own evidence. GRP framing also offers a corrosion-resistant material option. Compare the complete systems, including supports, connections, fire requirements and maintenance, rather than assuming a material name establishes performance.

Keep the completed route usable

Outdoor routes still need inspection, cleaning and a winter plan. Rain, contamination, algae, frost and ice change conditions underfoot. Keep drainage clear, remove deposits and manage freezing conditions with suitable treatment or restricted access. Match footwear and working arrangements to the conditions.

Panels need adequate bearing and restraint as well as a suitable surface. Do not lay loose grating on roof sheets or rooflights. Installation should follow the agreed design and product instructions, with the completed route checked before use.
