Installed light-grey solid top GRP flooring in an Oxford Brookes University interior access area
GRP grating route

Solid top GRP grating for closed anti-slip access surfaces.

A closed-surface GRP flooring route for areas where the walking surface needs to reduce dropped objects, visual openings, splash-through or debris transfer.

Where solid top earns its place

Solid top GRP grating with a closed anti-slip walking surface

Closed walking surfaces

Useful where people, tools or small items should not see through or pass through the floor, including service decks, covers and sensitive lower-level areas.

Grey GRP grating panel used for heavy industrial flooring

Corrosive environments

GRP avoids rust and repeated coating cycles around wet process areas, outdoor access, washdown routes, marine air and industrial service zones.

GRP Express customer care support for solid top grating

Support before ordering

Solid top changes drainage, weight and edge conditions. Send the project detail and we can check whether closed surface grating is the right fit.

Design checks before choosing solid top

Drainage

Solid top does not drain like open mesh. Consider falls, cleaning, bunding, water paths and whether open mesh would perform better.

Weight and handling

Closed-surface panels are generally heavier than equivalent open mesh panels. Plan lifting, access routes and removable cover sizes accordingly.

Support and fixing

Closed surfaces still need secure fixing and suitable bearing. Check support centres, edge trim, removable access and any penetrations.

Surface wear

Specify for wet, oily or dirty access with a gritted surface, then manage cleaning so the anti-slip finish can keep doing its job.

Solid top FAQs

Is solid top GRP grating fully sealed?

It is a closed walking surface bonded to a GRP grating base, but project details still matter. Confirm edges, cut-outs, drainage and fixing points before ordering.

When should I avoid solid top?

If fast drainage, airflow and lower panel weight are the main priorities, standard mesh or mini mesh may be a cleaner choice.

Can solid top panels be cut to shape?

Yes. Share a drawing, dimensions or repeat pattern and GRP Express can advise on panel yield, edge conditions and preparation.

Technical grating checkpoint

Solid top changes drainage, containment and loading behaviour

A closed walking surface can reduce through-fall of objects and liquids, but it also retains contamination and water. Establish whether the product is structural solid plate, grating with a bonded top or another composite build-up.

ConstructionRecord grating depth, top-sheet thickness, bond method, surface and total build-up.
DrainageProvide falls, outlets or cleaning controls; a closed top does not drain through the panel.
ContainmentDefine whether the aim is object retention, splash control or liquid containment—these are different duties.
Weight and handlingInclude panel weight, lifting method, cut sizes and safe removal for maintenance.
Specification areaWhat to establishEngineering boundary
Standard scopeBS 4592-5 for solid plates; another BS 4592 part may govern the supporting grating construction.Cite the part matching the actual product rather than saying only “BS 4592 compliant”.
Structural checkPoint load, UDL, deflection, clear span and support direction.A thin bonded top must not be assumed to create unverified structural capacity.
SurfaceRepresentative wet PTV and cleaning method.Solid surfaces can retain oils, fines and standing water that open mesh would shed.
InterfacesJoints, thresholds, hatches, doors and perimeter seals.Coordinate added thickness and prevent exposed edges or local trip points.

Important: Solid top does not automatically provide watertight bunding. Joints, penetrations, edges and the product build-up must be designed for any containment duty.

Solid-top design checkpoint

A closed surface changes drainage, weight and load behaviour

Solid-top grating may be a covered grating construction or a different structural plate system. Establish exactly what is being supplied and use performance data for that complete product—not an open-mesh table with an assumed cover.

Structural definition

  • Confirm the base grating or plate construction and overall depth.
  • Use the complete product load table for UDL and local loads.
  • Check additional dead load, lifting weight and support reactions.
  • Verify edge bearing, joints and fixing details.

Water and containment

  • Provide falls, outlets or drainage where standing water could form.
  • Do not assume panel joints create a liquid-tight surface.
  • Define whether the duty is debris control, splash reduction or true containment.
  • Assess liquids trapped beneath removable covers.

Surface and access

  • Check slip performance in the expected contamination state.
  • Control trip edges at joints and transitions.
  • Plan safe lifting points and panel weights for maintenance.
  • Identify concealed hazards before a panel is removed.

Solid top does not automatically make a trench cover

Vehicular, security, fall-prevention or heavy trench-cover duties require a verified cover system, frame, bearing and restraint arrangement. A pedestrian solid-top flooring panel should not be reclassified from appearance alone.

Solid-top technical FAQs

Is solid-top grating waterproof?

Not automatically. The panel surface may be closed, but joints, edges, penetrations and fixings require a designed sealing detail where liquid containment is needed.

Can I use an open-mesh load table?

No. Use verified data for the complete solid-top construction because the cover, bond, load distribution, weight and failure modes can differ.

Why must drainage still be designed?

A closed walking surface can retain rainwater, washdown or process liquids. Falls, outlets and maintenance must prevent ponding and contamination hazards.

Can solid-top panels carry vehicles?

Only when the complete product, support frame, wheel loads, dynamic effects, bearing and restraint have been specifically designed and verified for vehicle duty.
