Cutting GRP exposes the internal reinforcement and creates a new edge that must be made safe, supported and finished in line with the product instructions. Good fabrication controls dust and heat, avoids damaged fibres, and leaves a detail that can be inspected throughout service.
In brief
- Use suitable extraction, eye, skin and respiratory protection for the assessed cutting task.
- Support the workpiece so the blade does not bind or tear the laminate.
- Remove sharp fibres and loose material without rounding away required bearing surfaces.
- Apply the specified edge sealer where the manufacturer or environment requires it.
A controlled fabrication sequence
- Confirm the cut plan, bearing direction and support detail.
- Mark the finished line and protect the panel surface.
- Secure and support both sides of the intended cut.
- Use a suitable abrasive or carbide cutting tool with effective extraction.
- Deburr sharp fibres and inspect for chipping, cracking or delamination.
- Clean the edge and apply the approved resin system where specified.
- Allow the finish to cure, then inspect before installation.
What to inspect
| Check | Acceptable intent |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Correct size, square line and sufficient remaining material |
| Surface | No dangerous splinters, loose fibres or major breakout |
| Laminate | No visible cracking or separation extending into the component |
| Sealer | Continuous coverage where required, fully cured before service |
| Support | New edge, opening and narrow remnants are positively supported |
Sealing is not structural repair
Edge resin can protect exposed reinforcement and improve finishing, but it does not restore load bars removed by cutting or repair substantial delamination. Reject or obtain technical review for damaged components. Use our full cutting, fabrication and PPE guide before planning site work.
Frequently asked questions
Must every GRP cut edge be sealed?
Follow the product instructions and project specification. Requirements vary with product form, resin, exposure and warranty conditions.
Can I use any paint or resin?
No. Use a compatible, approved system and observe preparation and curing requirements.
What happens when a load bar is cut?
The structural load path changes. Re-plan the layout or add support rather than assuming edge sealer restores capacity.
