Installation and workshop support

Cutting, fabrication and PPE guide for GRP

GRP can be cut, drilled and prepared on site, but dust control, PPE, edge treatment and dimensional planning matter. Where possible, use cut-to-size support to reduce site work.

Before cutting GRP

Measure twice

Confirm finished dimensions, support bearing, cut-outs, fixing positions and panel orientation before any cut is made.

Control dust

Cutting GRP creates dust and fibre particles. Use suitable extraction, respiratory protection, eye protection, gloves and clothing based on the site risk assessment.

Protect the edge

Cut edges may need sealing or preparation depending on product, exposure, resin and specification requirements.

Common GRP fabrication tasks

Grating panels

Plan cuts around bearing bars, mesh openings, panel supports and clip positions. Avoid leaving unsupported narrow strips.

Profiles

For channels, angles, tubes and box sections, confirm cut length, hole pattern, tolerance and whether ends need sealing or drilling.

Anti-slip sheets

Dry-fit before bonding. Check thresholds, drainage, edge exposure, fasteners and adhesive cure before opening the route.

Cut-to-size anti-slip

Reduce risk by ordering prepared material

Site cutting can be useful, but repeated panels and profiles are often better handled through a measured cut list. That reduces dust, waste, handling time and installation uncertainty.

Want less cutting on site?

Send a cut list, sketch or marked-up drawing. We can help route it to cut-to-size grating, profile lengths or anti-slip preparation.

Expanded practical guidance

Control GRP fabrication from drawing to finished edge

Good fabrication starts with dimensions and support, then adds tool control, extraction, PPE, edge treatment and final inspection. Site cutting should be planned as a controlled task rather than treated as a simple trim.

Plan the geometry

Confirm orientation, finished size, tolerances, holes, cut-outs, bearing bars and fixing positions. Mark components so prepared parts return to the correct location.

Control dust and fibres

Use suitable extraction and task-specific respiratory, eye, hand, hearing and clothing controls based on the risk assessment and equipment instructions.

Inspect the result

Check dimensions, breakout, exposed fibres, holes, bearing areas and cut edges. Seal or finish surfaces where required by the product and exposure.

Information to confirm

  • Suitable work area and component support
  • Tooling, extraction, PPE and waste controls
  • Finished inspection and edge treatment

Practical questions

Can GRP be drilled and cut with ordinary workshop tools?

Suitable tools may be used, but blade or bit choice, dust extraction, work support and equipment instructions must be considered for the actual product.

When is factory preparation preferable?

Use prepared supply for repeated parts, close tolerances, labelled schedules, complex cut-outs or where site dust and waste need to be reduced.

GRP fabrication, machining, drilling and CNC-style cutting

Fabrication enquiries can include GRP fabrication service, GRP machining, GRP drilling, GRP CNC cutting, fibreglass CNC cutting, GRP waterjet cutting and panels with bespoke cut-outs. The appropriate cutting method depends on the product form, geometry, tolerance, finish and production quantity.

GRP Express can receive drawings, sketches and cut schedules for review through the cut-to-size GRP route. Complex methods such as CNC or waterjet should be confirmed against the actual material and project requirement before quotation.
