The substrate must be sound enough to support the system. Repair significant damage before installation.

Does every stair nosing need to be 55 mm by 55 mm?
No. Approved Document K gives specific visual-contrast guidance for its building scope. The actual profile must suit the applicable requirements and measured stair.
Can a nosing repair a damaged tread edge?
Not by itself. Loose concrete, corroded steel, rotten timber or unstable tiles must be repaired before a non-structural nosing is installed.
Should nosings be mechanically fixed?
The fixing system depends on the product, substrate, exposure and loading. Many projects use compatible adhesive with appropriate mechanical restraint, subject to the manufacturer’s detail.
What should be measured?
Record every tread width, rise and going, the existing edge profile, top-leg and downstand space, substrate and any landing or door interfaces.
