Define whether the route is for inspection, routine maintenance, material handling, emergency access or another purpose. Occupancy and use drive the design basis.
Roof load path
Confirm the elements capable of receiving walkway reactions. Do not assume a membrane, deck or fragile covering can accept support loads.
Waterproofing
Coordinate support feet, penetrations, protection layers and detailing with the roofing system and warranty requirements.
Drainage & movement
Keep outlets and falls clear. Allow for thermal and building movement where the length and restraint of the route make it relevant.
Wind exposure
Review uplift, lateral stability and restraint for the building height, location, route geometry and degree of exposure.
Grating span
Orient load-bearing bars correctly and select panel depth, support spacing and bearing around the actual loading and published data.
Point loads & deflection
Include concentrated loads from feet, tools, trolleys or equipment as applicable, plus acceptable serviceability and user comfort.
Openings & surface
Choose mesh and surface around drainage, debris, small-object risks, slip conditions and the environment; no one surface suits every roof.
Fixings & supports
Use compatible clips, fasteners and profiles with adequate bearing. Detail joints, panel edges and removable zones deliberately.
Route geometry
Set clear width, headroom, turning space, landings and access at maintenance points around people, tools and foreseeable use.
Edges & access control
Assess fall risks, openings and unauthorised access. Coordinate handrails, toe protection, gates and interfaces where required.
Environment & inspection
Confirm UV exposure, chemicals, resin or fire requirements and electrical considerations, then establish an inspection and maintenance plan.

Ask another questionCan a GRP walkway sit directly on a roof membrane?
Do not assume it can. The support arrangement must be coordinated with the roof construction, allowable load locations, waterproofing details and any warranty requirements. Protection layers or purpose-designed supports may be required.
Does a walkway make a fragile roof safe?
A defined walkway can form part of an access strategy, but it does not by itself remove all risks associated with a fragile roof. The route, supporting structure, edges, rooflights, access controls and work method must be assessed together.
Which way should GRP grating span?
Moulded and pultruded products have defined load-bearing directions. The bearing bars must span between suitable supports in the orientation assumed by the published performance data and project design.
Are handrails always required?
Not automatically in every location. The need for collective edge protection depends on the route, fall risk, roof geometry, access frequency, governing requirements and project risk assessment.
Can you supply a complete rooftop access route?

What should I send for a rooftop walkway enquiry?
