A GRP roof walkway should connect the point of access to every maintenance position while respecting the roof beneath it.

That means considering the governing use, roof structure, wind exposure, waterproofing, flooring span and every change in level together. GRP components can then form a lightweight, corrosion-resistant route with clearly defined walking surfaces and compatible handrail, platform, ladder and stepover elements.

Assess fall risks, openings and unauthorised access. Coordinate handrails, toe protection, gates and interfaces where required.

Can a GRP walkway sit directly on a roof membrane?

Do not assume it can. The support arrangement must be coordinated with the roof construction, allowable load locations, waterproofing details and any warranty requirements. Protection layers or purpose-designed supports may be required.

Does a walkway make a fragile roof safe?

A defined walkway can form part of an access strategy, but it does not by itself remove all risks associated with a fragile roof. The route, supporting structure, edges, rooflights, access controls and work method must be assessed together.

Which way should GRP grating span?

Moulded and pultruded products have defined load-bearing directions. The bearing bars must span between suitable supports in the orientation assumed by the published performance data and project design.

Are handrails always required?

Not automatically in every location. The need for collective edge protection depends on the route, fall risk, roof geometry, access frequency, governing requirements and project risk assessment.

Can you supply a complete rooftop access route?

What should I send for a rooftop walkway enquiry?
