COORDINATED INSTALLATION HARDWARE
Handrail Fixing Kits
Group compatible anchors, bolts, washers and connection hardware around the handrail system, substrate and installation environment.
Fixing kits reduce missing-hardware risk
A handrail fixing kit should correspond to a defined connection: baseplate to concrete, post to steel, rail to fitting or another approved interface. Generic kits are only useful when the substrate, sizes and system method are already known.
For project schedules, group fixing hardware by connection type and bay or area. This supports counting, packing and installation checks without obscuring the designer’s anchor specification.
Specify these details
- Handrail system and component sizes
- Baseplate or side-fixing detail
- Substrate material and thickness
- Anchor or bolt specification
- Exposure class, quantities and spares
Organise kits by connection type
Baseplate fixing kits
Anchors, bolts, nuts and washers coordinated with plate holes and a defined concrete or steel substrate.
Rail and fitting kits
Pins, bolts or other hardware used with the approved modular fitting and connection process.
Area or route packs
Hardware grouped by platform, stair, route or installation phase to simplify distribution and site checks.

A kit does not replace anchor design
Final anchor type, embedment, edge distance, substrate capacity and installation torque remain project-specific. Kits should package an approved requirement, not invent it.
- Use the specified grade and material
- Match bolt diameter to the approved hole detail
- Check anchor access and embedment
- Keep dissimilar-metal and corrosion risks in view
- Include controlled spares for installation loss
Selection and project checks
| Check | Why it matters | Information to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Connection type | Defines kit contents | Baseplate, side mount, rail joint or fitting |
| Substrate | Controls anchor selection | Concrete grade, steel thickness or GRP support detail |
| Hole geometry | Controls bolt and washer fit | Diameter, centres, slots and edge distances |
| Exposure | Controls hardware material | Internal, external, coastal, chemical or washdown |
Important: Product selection and quantities should be checked against the project drawings, substrate, loading, exposure and applicable design requirements. GRP Express can support preliminary selection, but the project designer remains responsible for the final installed arrangement.
Typical applications
New access systems
Coordinate the item with posts, rails, grating, stair treads, profiles and fixings before material is ordered.
Retrofit and repair
Use measured dimensions and photographs to match replacement components and avoid site modification where possible.
Corrosive environments
Review resin, exposure, fixings and interfaces where moisture, chemicals, salt or washdown affect the assembly.
Common project environments include water and wastewater, rail depots, utilities, energy, marine and coastal sites, chemical processing, manufacturing, rooftop access and public infrastructure. Resin, fire, slip, electrical and corrosion requirements must be reviewed for the actual site.
Frequently asked questions
Can you supply fixing kits by handrail bay?
Yes, where a checked component and connection schedule is available.
Are stainless steel fixings always suitable?
Material selection depends on exposure, compatibility and the project specification. Confirm grade and environment.
Should I order spare fixings?
A controlled allowance can help, but it should be agreed against the route count and installation conditions.

What a handrail fixing kit must define
A useful fixing kit controls the repeated component-to-component joint. It does not remove the need to design post spacing, baseplates, anchors or the structure receiving the handrail.
| Kit information | Required confirmation |
|---|---|
| Compatible parts | Rail/post profile, fitting code, wall thickness and permissible joint orientation |
| Fasteners | Type, diameter, material, grip range, washer and locking method |
| Machining | Hole diameter, location, number, drill method and permitted tolerance |
| Bonding | Adhesive/primer, surface preparation, mix, bond-line and cure conditions if used |
| Inspection | Seating, engagement, damage, fastener installation and cure evidence |
Separate the rail/fitting kit from substrate anchors unless the kit has been specified for the exact base material, thickness, edge distance and environmental exposure.
Specification note: Do not market a kit as universally compliant. State which assembly it supports and which project-specific design checks remain outside the kit.
Connection specification guide
A fixing kit is a controlled connection package—not an anchor design
The kit should make the component-to-component connection repeatable by defining the fitting family, fastener type, material grade, washers and quantity. The structural fixing into concrete, steelwork, GRP or another substrate is a separate engineering interface unless it is explicitly specified.
What the kit must match
- Handrail profile and fitting family.
- Connection type and hole arrangement.
- Fastener diameter, length and head form.
- Nut, washer and locking method.
- Correct quantity for every connection.
What remains project-specific
- Base plate and applied actions.
- Substrate material, thickness and condition.
- Anchor type, embedment and spacing.
- Edge distances and reinforcement conflicts.
- Pull-out, shear and installation verification.
Environment and compatibility
- Confirm corrosion exposure and fastener grade.
- Consider dissimilar-metal contact and isolation.
- Protect cut or drilled interfaces where required.
- Check chemical and temperature exposure.
- Avoid mixing unverified kit substitutions.
Installation control matters
GRP can be locally damaged by poorly positioned holes or excessive clamping. Follow the approved hole sizes, clearances, washer arrangement and tightening method; do not apply an assumed steelwork torque. Inspect for crushing, splitting, loose fittings and damaged protective surfaces before handover.
Kit schedule checklist
For each connection, record the fitting reference, connected members, fastener specification, washer and locking arrangement, quantity, exposure class or material requirement, installation instruction and inspection criterion. List substrate anchors separately unless they form part of a verified project-specific package.
Fixing-kit FAQs
Does a handrail fixing kit include structural anchors?
Only if the product description explicitly says so. Component fasteners and substrate anchors perform different jobs, and anchor selection depends on the supporting material and project actions.
Can I substitute a different bolt or washer?
Do not substitute without checking diameter, length, grade, head form, bearing area, locking method, corrosion compatibility and the verified connection arrangement.
How tight should fixings into GRP be?
Use the installation method specified for the connection. Excessive tightening can crush or split GRP, so do not transfer a generic steelwork torque value without verification.
What information is needed to select substrate anchors?
Define the applied tension and shear, base geometry, substrate type and strength, thickness, edge distances, reinforcement or voids, environment, installation access and required proof-testing regime.
