Open mesh, solid top or covers?

Open-mesh stair treads suit drainage and exposed access. Solid-top stair treads provide a covered tread surface. Covers and nosings are often the retrofit route for existing stairs.

From product choice to a defensible stair specification

Choose between a nosing, full cover and structural tread only after the hazard, geometry, support, loading, users and applicable design framework are known.

NosingUse for local edge grip and contrast where the existing tread surface and structure remain suitable.
Full coverUse where most of a sound tread needs a new high-friction surface and leading-edge treatment.
Structural treadUse where the product carries load between stringers or supports; confirm span, bearing, load and deflection.
Complete stairCoordinate rise, going, landings, handrails, guarding, lighting, drainage and evacuation—not merely the tread.

Important: The normal Approved Document K relationship is 2R + G = 550–700 mm. Consistency through the flight remains essential.
