The challenge

Replacing failed steel around critical infrastructure

The existing steel cover had suffered significant corrosion and damage. It was removed by the client, leaving the outfall chamber exposed and requiring a durable replacement suitable for a water-industry environment.

The new system needed to enclose the chamber while accommodating the existing equipment, penetrations and surrounding access arrangement. Strength, safe access and resistance to ongoing corrosion were central to the brief.

The objective was not simply to cover the opening. It was to create a surveyed, project-specific access floor that could be fabricated accurately and installed efficiently on site.

The engineered response

Surveyed, detailed and prefabricated

Following the initial site visit, the team completed a full survey and worked with M&C Engineering to assess the appropriate GRP options. A complete GRP support frame and solid-top floor system was proposed to fully enclose the outfall chamber.

  • Detailed fabrication drawings prepared following approval
  • GRP frame cut and assembled in-house
  • Solid-top panels coordinated around chamber equipment
  • Prefabrication used to reduce work and delay on site

Project delivery

From survey to completed cover

Survey the chamber

Capture the geometry, equipment positions and operational constraints.

Develop the system

Coordinate the frame, panels, openings and fixing arrangement in detailed drawings.

Fabricate in-house

Cut and assemble the GRP frame before delivery to control quality and fit.

Install efficiently

Deliver the prefabricated components and complete the enclosure ahead of schedule.

The installed system

A precise finish around the existing equipment

The completed floor created a continuous solid-top surface while retaining the required equipment penetrations and interfaces. The panel layout and fixing positions reflect the surveyed site conditions rather than a standard, off-the-shelf cover arrangement.

Using GRP removed the recurring corrosion concern associated with the failed steel cover and created a low-maintenance, long-term access solution for the chamber.

Delivery and outcome

Built for safer, longer-term access

The site team completed the installation ahead of schedule, meeting the requirements of both M&C Engineering and Anglian Water. The completed system enclosed the exposed chamber and provided a corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance finish designed for long-term service.
