The challenge

Durable public access without compromising the setting

The development needed a boardwalk, viewing platforms and access structures within a natural mangrove habitat. Conventional materials risked corrosion, repeated maintenance and potential harm to the surrounding environment.

Extreme heat, intense sunlight and high salt content added to the specification challenge. At the same time, the finished structure needed to blend with the landscape rather than feel industrial.

The material choice had to answer two briefs at once: long-term resistance to a severe coastal environment and an appearance appropriate for an immersive nature destination.

The material response

Resin, colour and structure selected for the habitat

Following site inspection and environmental assessment, GRP grating was recommended for the walkways and platforms, supported by fabricated GRP profile sections. The system was developed specifically around the exposure conditions and architectural intent.

  • Vinylester resin specified for high-salt exposure
  • UV inhibitors used to support long-term colour stability
  • Custom pigment developed to echo traditional timber
  • GRP profiles fabricated into the required access structures

Project delivery

From requirement to completed access

Assess

Review the site, environmental constraints and public-access requirements.

Specify

Select resin, UV protection and surface characteristics for the exposure.

Colour

Develop a timber-toned pigment aligned with the natural surroundings.

Fabricate

Form the grating and profile system into walkways and platforms.

The installed system

The warmth of timber without the coastal maintenance burden

The custom colour treatment gives the boardwalk a natural visual character while the underlying GRP system remains resistant to corrosion and decay. Open-mesh flooring also allows light, air and water to move through the structure.

The result supports visitor movement, observation points and learning spaces while reducing the whole-life maintenance demands normally associated with a saltwater environment.

Delivery and outcome

Visitor access aligned with the sustainability brief

The completed approach delivered a durable and environmentally considerate boardwalk system suited to the mangrove setting. Material performance, colour and fabrication were combined to create infrastructure that supports sustainable tourism without dominating the landscape.
