The challenge

Connecting track teams safely across new infrastructure

The Hague Bar landslip repair works introduced a new retaining wall and required practical access for track teams. The route had to be safe, durable and straightforward to integrate into a complex rail environment.

Vital GRP was commissioned to survey the site and discuss suitable options with Network Rail. The selected arrangement needed to support direct installation without specialist lifting equipment or an additional installation contractor.

The decisive feature was installability: the access steps had to deliver reliable performance while remaining light and modular enough for the client team to handle.

The supply response

Four modular units designed around client installation

Following the survey, GRP access steps were identified as the most effective solution. Four modular units were supplied directly to Network Rail with the handrails, treads and structural arrangement developed for straightforward positioning on site.

  • Lightweight units suited to manual handling and local positioning
  • Corrosion-resistant construction for long-term trackside exposure
  • Slip-resistant treads and clearly defined step edges
  • Modular arrangement coordinated with the retaining-wall works

Project delivery

From requirement to completed access

Survey

Review the new retaining wall, levels and safe access requirements.

Select

Agree a modular GRP stair format with the Network Rail team.

Fabricate

Produce four complete access step units for direct supply.

Install

Enable the client team to position the systems without heavy lifting.

The installed system

Straightforward installation, durable trackside performance

The completed steps provide defined, slip-resistant routes beside the retaining wall. GRP’s low weight reduced installation demands while its corrosion resistance supports long-term outdoor service.

By allowing Network Rail to install the units directly, the modular approach reduced labour cost, avoided specialist lifting and helped the wider repair programme progress with less disruption.

Delivery and outcome

Safe access integrated into the wider landslip repair

The completed units provide track teams with durable routes from the retaining-wall works. The supply model combined a project-specific survey with a simple installation strategy, delivering safety, low maintenance and programme efficiency.
