The challenge

Modernising access inside a live engineering facility

Oxford Brookes University is home to advanced engineering facilities where students work on Formula One vehicles. The existing concrete trench covers had become outdated and were no longer fit for purpose.

Willmott Dixon required a safer, lighter and more durable replacement that could be delivered and installed quickly, with minimal disruption to the live internal environment.

The replacement needed to improve safety and handling while fitting neatly into an existing floor system—not simply exchange one heavy cover for another.

The installed response

A project-specific cover system for a high-performance setting

The team completed the full supply and installation of a GRP trench-cover system developed around the existing openings and internal floor environment. The material created a durable walking surface while retaining practical access to the trench below.

  • Anti-slip surfacing to improve safety underfoot
  • Lightweight panels for easier handling and service access
  • Corrosion-resistant GRP for long-term durability
  • Panel layout fitted to the existing trench arrangement

Project delivery

From requirement to completed access

Assess

Review the existing concrete covers, openings and live environment.

Prepare

Develop and fabricate the GRP panel arrangement to suit the trench.

Install

Remove and replace the outdated covers with minimal disruption.

Resolve

Address unforeseen site conditions promptly to protect the programme.

The installed system

A clean floor finish with practical access built in

The installed panels create a continuous, slip-resistant surface through the engineering space while maintaining the access points required for the services below.

Unforeseen installation challenges were resolved by the site team without delaying the programme. The work was completed on time, to specification and to a standard positively recognised by Willmott Dixon.

Delivery and outcome

A safer, longer-lasting replacement for concrete

Oxford Brookes now has a modern trench-cover system that is easier to handle, resistant to corrosion and suited to an active engineering environment. The project combined a practical material upgrade with responsive on-site delivery.
