The challenge

Four offshore risks concentrated in one access system

Constant saltwater exposure, humidity and heavy use had left steel platforms vulnerable to corrosion, slippery surfaces and recurring maintenance. The access arrangement also had to satisfy demanding offshore fire requirements.

Weight was a further operational constraint. The client needed a rapid replacement solution that could improve safety and durability without carrying the mass penalty of traditional steel structures.

The specification needed to address slip risk, maintenance, fire performance and structural weight together—not as separate product decisions.

The engineered response

One coordinated system across multiple access levels

Following site inspection, the engineering team developed a GRP platform system using grating and structural profiles. Phenolic components were specified to meet the project fire-performance requirements, including BS 476 and ASTM E84 criteria stated in the project brief.

  • Multi-level walkways and working platforms
  • GRP handrails, access ladders and staircases
  • Anti-slip surfaces throughout the access routes
  • Phenolic fire-retardant grating and structural components

Project delivery

From requirement to completed access

Inspect

Assess the existing access routes, exposure and operational constraints.

Engineer

Coordinate platforms, stairs, ladders and handrails as one system.

Specify

Apply phenolic materials where the offshore fire brief required them.

Deliver

Fabricate and install a lightweight, corrosion-resistant access package.

The installed system

Safer footing with less weight and less corrosion

Anti-slip treads and grating improve secure movement through wet offshore areas, while the GRP construction removes the recurring corrosion mechanism associated with exposed steel access structures.

The high strength-to-weight ratio also simplified the replacement strategy and contributed to a reported 50% weight reduction across the delivered solution.

Delivery and outcome

A compliant access upgrade for critical offshore use

The delivered system combined safer movement, reduced corrosion maintenance, fire-retardant material performance and lower structural weight. It demonstrates how a bespoke composite package can answer several offshore risks through one coordinated design.
