Safer pedestrian routes
GRP Anti-Slip Walkway Covers
GRP walkway covers are gritted overlays used to renew the walking surface of existing routes, platforms and access ways. They are selected around the substrate, traffic, contamination and drainage, and are distinct from load-bearing GRP grating or structural flooring.
Overlay option
For sound concrete, steel, timber or GRP substrates that need a durable anti-slip wearing surface.
Structural option
Use purpose-designed grating or flooring where the new GRP must span between supports or carry the imposed load.
Survey focus
Route width, levels, joints, edges, obstructions, drainage, traffic, contamination and maintenance access.
Select the right walkway construction
First establish whether the existing deck is structurally adequate. A thin anti-slip sheet or strip follows and protects a substrate; it is not a replacement for a missing floor panel. Where spanning capability is required, select a grating or closed-surface panel using verified load and deflection data for the actual clear span and support detail.
For overlays, develop a cut plan that limits small pieces and positions joints away from turning points, thresholds and heavily trafficked lines. Detail exposed edges and changes in level. Maintain drainage falls and leave access to inspection points, fixings and services.
- Map the route dimensions, substrate changes, covers, hatches, penetrations and edge conditions.
- Identify pedestrian and wheeled traffic, point loads, dropped objects and maintenance activities.
- Record water, oil, grease, powders, process residues, UV, temperature and cleaning chemicals.
- Choose slip evidence using the product, surface condition, slider and test direction relevant to the route.
Fixing, inspection and cleaning
Prepare the substrate to the adhesive manufacturer requirements and confirm that mechanical fixings can be installed without damaging services or weakening edges. Trial fit all pieces, maintain consistent joints and remove raised burrs or fibres. The fixing pattern should resist movement and curling for the stated traffic and exposure.
Cleaning must remove contamination without polishing, attacking or clogging the surface. Set inspection frequency from actual use, with additional checks after impact, alterations or severe weather. Investigate loose fixings, damaged grit, movement, blocked drainage and trip-forming edges promptly.
Information to provide
| Design input | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Construction | Overlay on a sound deck or structural panel spanning between supports. |
| Cut plan | Panel sizes, joints, hatches, penetrations, perimeter edges and waste allowance. |
| Environment | Traffic, contaminants, weather, cleaning and chemical exposure. |
| Handover | Fixing record, cure time, inspection points and cleaning instructions. |
GRP Anti-Slip Products
GRP Walkway Covers
GRP walkway covers provide a tough anti-slip surface for pedestrian routes, platforms, gantries, service access paths and worn walkway areas.
Where GRP walkway covers are used
Pedestrian routes
Walkway covers help improve grip on regular foot traffic routes through yards, buildings, plants, compounds and public access areas.
Platforms and gantries
Use covers on elevated access routes, platforms and maintenance areas where a durable, corrosion-resistant surface is needed.
Worn surface upgrades
GRP walkway covers can be fitted over suitable existing surfaces to add anti-slip performance without rebuilding the whole walkway.
Why choose GRP walkway covers?
- Slip-resistant surface for wet, dirty or exposed pedestrian routes.
- Corrosion-resistant GRP construction for industrial and outdoor conditions.
- Lightweight compared with many metal walkway surface options.
- Available with cut-to-size support for contractors, maintenance teams and trade customers.
Choosing the right walkway cover
The right walkway cover depends on route width, length, traffic level, fixing method and the condition of the existing surface. GRP Express can help turn site dimensions into a practical product option or cutting list.
For related surfaces, compare GRP ramp covers, GRP anti-slip sheets and GRP decking strips.
Useful details to send
- Walkway width, length and number of routes.
- Existing surface type and site conditions.
- Pedestrian, trolley or maintenance traffic.
- Any drawing, photograph, cutting list or trade requirement.
Need GRP walkway covers cut to size?
Send your walkway dimensions, surface notes or drawings and GRP Express can help with anti-slip walkway cover options for your project.
Technical grating checkpoint
Walkway covers are retrofit surfaces, not replacement structure
A GRP walkway cover can improve grip and protect a sound route, but the existing deck or walkway remains responsible for load carrying unless a separately designed structural system is provided.
| Specification area | What to establish | Engineering boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Surface evidence | Representative wet PTV, aggregate, direction, wear and cleaning. | Avoid inferring performance from grit appearance. |
| Geometry | Width, falls, crossfall, joints, edges and drainage. | The cover cannot correct an inadequate walkway width, fall or guarding. |
| Environment | UV, water, oil, chemicals, temperature and coastal exposure. | Match sheet, resin, adhesive and fasteners. |
| Inspection | Loose edges, worn grit, impact damage, ponding and bond failure. | Set frequency from risk and exposure. |
Important: Do not use a thin walkway cover to bridge holes, unsupported gaps or heavily degraded flooring.

Buy GRP walkway covers or request a route layout
Use walkway covers for longer pedestrian routes where broad anti-slip coverage and repeat panel planning are needed.
Confirm route width, total length, turns, thresholds, drainage, substrate and repeated panel sizes before ordering.
GRP walkway covers and retrofit anti-slip walkway panels
Searches may include GRP walkway cover, fibreglass walkway overlay, anti-slip walkway cover and retrofit panels for worn steel, concrete or timber access routes. These products suit surface-renewal applications where the underlying structure remains suitable and the correct fixing arrangement can be achieved.
