How-to guide
How to Measure GRP Grating
Measure the clear opening, support direction and required finish before choosing GRP grating. The right measurements prevent under-supported edges, excessive trimming and avoidable site delays.
Measurement sequence
- Measure the clear opening at the front, middle and back.
- Identify the load-bearing support direction before choosing panel orientation.
- Record any pipes, notches, kick plates, upstands, frames or awkward corners.
- Allow for trimming only where the panel edge remains properly supported.
- Check whether the panel will be lifted regularly for access.
For repeated bays, give each opening a reference and measure every bay. Site steelwork and concrete frames are rarely identical across a run.
Panel estimate calculator
Important: this estimates area coverage only. It does not verify load/span, bearing bar direction, deflection, fixing layout or the suitability of cut edges.
Before you order
Send dimensions, photos, span direction and intended duty if the grating sits over a pit, trench, duct, roof, platform or public route. We can help check the product route before you commit.
Expanded practical guidance
Record the opening, supports and bearing direction
A length-by-width dimension is not enough for reliable grating selection. Measurements should show the clear opening, support locations, bearing direction, available bearing, obstructions, cut-outs and how the finished panel will be installed or lifted.
Measure more than once
Check the front, middle and rear of an opening. Existing steelwork and concrete are rarely perfectly square, so record the smallest and largest dimensions.
Map the supports
Show which edges and intermediate members carry the panel. Record clear spans, support widths, levels and any frame or upstand that affects bearing.
Capture site constraints
Photograph pipes, corners, falls, drainage, access restrictions and lifting requirements. Number repeated bays so dimensions cannot be confused.
Information to confirm
- Clear opening and overall frame size
- Bearing direction, span and support width
- Cut-outs, obstructions and finished level
- Surface, fixings, lifting and delivery access
Practical questions
Can area alone determine the number of panels?
Area is useful for an initial estimate but does not confirm panel orientation, usable cuts, support, load or fixing positions.
What should be sent for a measurement check?
Provide a dimensioned sketch, photographs, intended duty, support direction and any known load or specification requirement.
