How to Cut GRP Grating Safely

Cutting GRP is straightforward when the panel is properly supported, the cut line is marked clearly and dust control is planned before the blade starts. This guide is for trimming and preparation, not structural redesign.

Cutting sequence

  1. Confirm the finished size, bearing direction and support points.
  2. Wear eye, hand, respiratory and hearing protection suitable for GRP dust.
  3. Support the panel both sides of the cut to prevent vibration and breakout.
  4. Mark the cut line and keep the blade steady, without forcing the cut.
  5. Dress sharp edges, remove dust and seal exposed cut faces where required.
  6. Inspect the panel before installation and reject damaged bearing areas.

Plan, support and finish every GRP cut

Cutting quality depends on preparation as much as the tool. Confirm the bearing direction and finished support first, control dust at source, support both sides of the cut and inspect the finished edge before installation.

Before cutting

Mark the finished dimensions, identify load-bearing bars, check cut-outs and confirm that narrow remnants or unsupported edges will not be created.

During cutting

Use suitable equipment, extraction and task-specific PPE. Support the panel to limit vibration and keep hands, cables and extraction clear of the cutting path.

After cutting

Remove dust, dress sharp fibres, inspect bearing areas and seal exposed edges where the product, resin, environment or specification requires it.
