How to Install Anti-Slip Stair Nosings

GRP stair nosings improve visibility and grip at the leading edge of a step. Good installation starts with clean substrate, consistent alignment and a fixing method suited to the stair material.

Installation sequence

  1. Measure every tread width and check for worn, broken or uneven nosing lines.
  2. Clean, dry and prepare the substrate before adhesive or mechanical fixing.
  3. Set out the first nosing and keep a consistent projection across the flight.
  4. Drill pilot holes where mechanical fixings are required.
  5. Bed the nosing down evenly and tighten fixings without distortion.
  6. Check for proud edges, trip points, loose fixings and contamination before reopening the stairs.

Allow for waste, mitres, damaged treads and any colour or contrast requirements. Public access stairs may require a fuller specification review.

Checks before use

Confirm the nosing cannot rock, lift or catch footwear. Where adhesive is used, follow curing guidance before the stairs return to service.

Expanded practical guidance

Install stair nosings as a complete edge detail

A stair-nosing installation needs a sound substrate, consistent position, compatible adhesive and suitable mechanical fixings. The finished edge should remain visible, secure and free from trip points.

Survey the stair

Check tread width, edge condition, contamination, moisture, damage, falls, nosing projection and any existing covering that could affect adhesion or fixing.

Dry fit first

Cut and position every section before applying adhesive. Keep widths and setbacks consistent and resolve corners, joints and thresholds before fixing.

Fix and release

Follow the product and adhesive instructions, use the stated fixing pattern, remove swarf and adhesive squeeze-out, then respect cure time before reopening the stair.

Information to confirm

  • Sound, clean and prepared substrate
  • Correct product size and visible contrast
  • Compatible adhesive and mechanical fixings
  • Final bond, edge and trip-hazard inspection

Practical questions

Is adhesive alone sufficient?

The fixing method depends on the product, substrate, environment and specification. Many installations use both compatible adhesive and mechanical fixings.

When can the stair reopen?

Only after the adhesive and fixing system have reached the condition required by their instructions and the completed stair has been inspected.
